Projects of Interest

Talking Points:  R.O.C.C.S. is working on a grassroots effort to educate young women about ovarian cancer.  There are two pamphlets, one talking about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, the other listing key questions to ask your doctor once diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  Our goal is to distribute these informational pamphlets to health clinics at local universities and colleges and to public health clinics.

Four higher education institutions in CT have joined these efforts.  They include University of Hartford, UCONN Storrs campus, St. Joseph College in West Hartford, and Connecticut College. If you are interested in receiving educational materials or helping with this project, email R.O.C.C.S. or call (860) 205-9595.

Survivors Teaching Students (STS) - "Survivors Teaching Students: Saving Women's Lives"

This program, started by Betty Reiser, a life long ovarian cancer survivor under the auspices of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, believed that third year medical students would benefit from hearing women's stories and better understand from their experiences the urgency for early detection of this difficult to diagnose disease. With Ms. Reiser's guidance, survivors will go through a training program to learn how to share their story in the most concise and effective way.

R.O.C.C.S. is proud to be a part of this initiative. Together, R.O.C.C.S. and the University of Connecticut (UCONN) Oncology Department will If you are an ovarian cancer survivor and interested in participating in "Survivors Teaching Students", email mbchaiklin@comcast.net or call (860) 205-9595. Ms. Reiser's program, already established at the Yale School of Medicine, wishes to increase the number of teaching opportunities throughout the State of Connecticut. All information will be kept confidential and if at any time should you feel you are unable to continue with the program, we will support your decision.

The Bonnie Schneider STS Fund has been established through R.O.C.C.S., in loving memory of Bonnie Sue Schneider, by her family and friends in support of R.O.C.C.S. participation in the STS program.  All funds dedicated to this project are soley for the use of supporting STS volunteers.  No funds raised are used to support administrative or operational expenses.
